Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid turns inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the eyeball.
This can lead to irritation, tearing, and pain, resulting in discomfort in daily life, requiring proper treatment.
While some cases of entropion may not require surgery, ophthalmological examination and treatment are necessary in the following cases:
01. Frequent inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva
02. Excessive eye discharge or tearing caused by eyelash irritation
03. When eyelashes scratch the cornea, affecting vision
04. When epicanthal folds persist beyond the age of 3
It is caused by contraction due to scarring from trauma, burns, chemical injuries, or ulcers on the eyelid skin. It can also result from spasms in the skin adhered to lesions such as periosteitis or osteomyelitis of the orbital margin.
It occurs when the front part of the eye protrudes, or the volume inside the orbit increases, pushing the eyelid outward. This is further worsened by spasms in the orbicularis muscle.
Caused by the relaxation of the eyelid skin and orbicularis muscle, this condition is common in elderly individuals and requires surgical treatment similar to paralytic ectropion.
This is a pediatric condition caused by excess skin and subcutaneous fat in the lower eyelid, pushing the eyelid inward. While it may improve with age, severe cases may require surgery.
For children under 3 years old, medication such as eye drops is used whenever inflammation occurs.
After the age of 3, eyelashes often naturally become less irritating,
and since the lashes are relatively thin and soft, they are less likely to cause severe corneal damage.
※ If surgery is necessary, it is performed after consulting with an ophthalmologist for children over 3 years old.
In cases where most eyelashes touch the cornea, there is a risk of severe inflammation, which may later cause corneal opacity and affect vision, requiring treatment.
In cases where most eyelashes touch the cornea, there is a risk of severe inflammation, which may later cause corneal opacity and affect vision, requiring treatment.
For cicatricial and senile types, surgery is performed to correct the direction of the eyelid.
For the spastic type, treatment addresses underlying conjunctival or corneal conditions causing the spasms.
Ectropion refers to a condition in which the eyelid turns outward, exposing the inner conjunctiva.
If the lower eyelid is turned outward and the eyeball is persistently exposed, this can cause not only cosmetic concerns but also functional issues, requiring prompt treatment.
01. When caused by eyelid loosening due to aging
02. When caused by cosmetic surgeries such as medial or lateral canthoplasty
03. When caused by facial paralysis
04. When caused by trauma, inflammation, or scarring that results in skin contraction
It results from contraction caused by scarring from trauma, burns, chemical injuries, or ulcers on the eyelid. It can also occur from skin spasms adhered to lesions such as periosteitis or osteomyelitis.
This condition occurs when the front part of the eye protrudes, or the orbital volume increases, pushing the eyelid outward. Spasms in the orbicularis muscle worsen the condition.
Caused by relaxation of the eyelid skin and orbicularis muscle, this condition is common in the elderly and requires surgical treatment similar to paralytic ectropion.
This condition occurs when paralysis of the orbicularis muscle results in the loss of support for the eyelid. It commonly appears in the lower eyelid and may require a skin graft procedure if conservative treatment fails.
Excising or dissecting the scar tissue to remove adhesions and filling the defect with a skin graft from another part of the body.
- Correcting lower eyelid laxity
(A surgical procedure that involves excising part of the tarsal plate and skin, then pulling the eyelid outward to tighten it.)
- Excising or dissecting the scar tissue to remove adhesions.
- If there is severe skin loss, a skin graft from another part of the body may be performed.
